Several years ago, the author of a book about an illustration program -- not CorelDRAW -- created his book's graphics with CorelDRAW. Why such blasphemy? Primarily because the application he was writing about was harder to use and had fewer features. To this day, we agree: CorelDRAW is an easy-to-master, exceptionally powerful program with a luxuriant toolset and a lucid interface.
Version 11 adds several new illustration tools and better import/export filters. Although CorelDRAW won't set any speed records when handling complex files, its many outstanding features make it the best illustration program in its class.

CorelDRAW's completely configurable interface helps solidify its supremacy over the competition. The program makes it easy to create your own toolbars, menus and macros as you work, and then save that customised workspace for specific tasks. For example, if you build lots of flowcharts, you can design an interface that puts all the most important flowchart tools right at your fingertips. We also love CorelDRAW's cross-platform support and vast range of import/export filters. The filters let you port files to and from other design programs, including Photoshop, Illustrator and Visio. For example, when we exported a multilayer CorelDRAW file to a Photoshop file, the layer arrangement remained intact. And since CorelDRAW 11 is optimised for Windows XP and carbonised for Apple OS X, the program can take advantage of pertinent operating system features, such as XP themes and security settings. Graphics professionals get some good news, too: CorelDRAW 11 finally supports symbols, so you can save artwork (a symbol) to a central library, then drag and drop it into any document as many times as you want. In the past, if you wanted to reuse objects such as arrows or call-out boxes, you had to save each image to a new file, then copy and paste this file into your illustration -- a time- and resource-consuming process. Symbols are faster, easier, and don't significantly increase file size. Version 11 also introduces a few new tools, including pressure-sensitive smudge and roughen brushes that respectively blur and texturise object outlines. These brushes, unfortunately, aren't as responsive as similar tools in Adobe’s Illustrator, but we give a big thumbs-up to a major enhancement that lets you convert paragraph text to curves, then apply artistic effects, such as drop shadows, without losing paragraph formatting. Fortunately, even with all these fancy new features, CorelDRAW remains easy to use for novices and pros alike, thanks to its self-explanatory tools and intuitive, customisable interface. Anyone who can print a Word document can get to grips with CorelDRAW in an hour or two. However, we recommend this program primarily for serious amateur and professional designers.

With over 100 million users around the world, Avast! Antivirus has proven itself to be one of the more popular security programs available. Improvements to its interface last year, and a continued great feature-set make Avast! a great antivirus alternative.

The Avast! interface is both visually pleasing and functional. The front page of the Dashboard displays the system's security status at the top of the screen; below that is a prominent on/off option for Silent/Gaming Mode, which will prevent Avast! from displaying pop-up messages for the specified time period.
(Avast! will automatically suppress pop-ups if an application is running in full screen mode.) A menu bar on the Dashboard's left hand side provides easy access to the program's additional features, including virus scanning, real-time shields, and miscellaneous protections.

Avast! outshines many other anti-virus platforms in both the protections and features it offers. Real-Time Shields is Avast's name for its instantaneous scanning of known and potentially unknown viruses. Avast! offers a wide swath of real-time scanners for file system, mail, Web, P2P apps, Instant Messaging, arbitrary network connections, Web scripts, and rootkits and other malware. Each scanner displays a graph of its current scanning activity; a red bar appears on the scanner if Avast! detects an attempted intrusion.

The Additional Protection menu is where Avast! stores all of its goodies. TheSandbox permits running suspicious or untrusted applications in a limited execution environment; if the application contains malware, Avast! will limit the damage it can inflict on your system. The new AutoSandbox feature uses real-time heuristics to place applications that exhibit suspicious behavior in the Sandbox without user action. Most intriguing of the miscellaneous features is the new SafeZone, a unique service that launches a separate desktop with a stripped-down, extension-free version of Google Chrome called the SafeZone Web Browser. (Technically, the SafeZone Browser is built off of Chromium, Google's open-source code base for Chrome; with a few exceptions, it is functionally equivalent to Chrome.) Avast! prevents other applications or browser extensions from accessing SafeZone's execution context and network traffic, preventing keystroke-loggers and other malware from capturing data for sensitive personal and financial transactions.

The default interface is still a stripped down player that belies VLC's functionality and features. Skinning can fix that quickly, but behavior can still be a bit unpredictable depending on the quality of the skin. VLC's open-source foundation and community ensures that it evolves quickly and often, with new features and fixes released frequently. Overall, VLC Media Player is a must-have application for its ability to open just about any type of video file you throw at it.

Although Windows operating systems have always strove to offer the utmost flexibility to the user, for better looks you always needed third party software. With XP, this job is clearly a bit more difficult, given that it is an operating system built specifically for performance, thus giving a lower priority to appearance. However, shelling out a few bucks (and sometimes even none at all) would always bring comfortable yet amazing aesthetics infusion into the default shell.

CorelDRAW is a vector illustration program. Images are displayed on the computer screen as pixels. How the program treats the pixels is determined by whether the image is defined as a vector or a bitmap. A bitmap file defines the position, color and size of each pixel. A vector program defines a line of pixels and treats them as a single object. To change an object in a bitmap, you must change all the pixels, so if a red box on a blue background needs to be smaller, you have to re-create a smaller red box and change the pixels where the box was to the blue background.
When you have a vector image, you redefine the size and location of the lines. Each object is independent of the others and can be manipulated as needed.
